GITANJALI
The waste pickers generally live below the poverty line. They are an exploited class, mainly by the scrap shop owners. Other sections of the society generally shun them due to the nature of their work. Majority of the women and children waste pickers are continuously exposed to dirt, filth and waste and face many occupational health hazards. SEWA has organised 30,265 waste pickers in the city of Ahmedabad and formed their own cooperative.
In 1995, Shri Gitanjali Mahila SEWA Industrial Stationery Producers Cooperative Ltd is a member-owned and led social enterprise that organises women waste pickers and manufactures stationery products from recycled waste.
Among the products of the cooperative are a wide range of paper products made from waste/recycled material. this includes : Notebooks, Notepads, Diaries, Pen, Pen-stands, Paper Bags, Innovative Jewellery, and other Innovative Products.
